If it doesn’t, you’re kind of stuck.īlogo’s image handling is as simple as the rest of the interface. If Blogo works for you out of the box, great. Unlike MarsEdit and ecto, Blogo just doesn’t give you as many options to tweak to your liking. That simplicity can be good, but also comes at a price. It has the most attractive interface of the three, and is also the most simple. When I first started, I thought that Blogo would be my choice.
I just want to write, without thinking about HTML. I know that some of you are coders, and like handcrafting each post, with minute control. What I was looking for was an app that handled images easily (especially padding between the image and the text), something that integrated well with WordPress, and something that just let me write. Don’t expect any of them to be as easy to use as Live Writer, though, as none of the apps offer an easy way to import your theme for WYSIWYG editing, as with Live Writer. Each app has strengths and weaknesses, so your choice will come down to your workflow and your personal preferences. You should do that, as there’s no right or wrong answer here.

My search for a replacement for Live Writer focused on three choices: Blogo, MarsEdit, and ecto.Īll three apps offer a fully functional trial version, so you can try out each and decide which one you prefer. Cast whatever stones you want at Microsoft for other reasons, but Live Writer is an excellent blogging app. Since I’m not dual booting or running virtualization on my MacBook Air, I ran into that issue when searching for a replacement for Windows Live Writer. While there are many great OS X apps, sometimes it can be hard to find the perfect replacement for an app that you’ve used on Windows.

One of the nice touches in this new interface: If you’ve pasted a URL into your clipboard, selecting the Add Link option will produce the required field with the hyperlink already pasted in. A pane slides out with the blog’s categories, plus server options regarding text formatting, comments, and trackbacks.
You can access this feature by clicking the Options button in the toolbar at the top of a new post’s window. This version of MarsEdit has corrected one of the few downsides of the previous version by letting you set the preferences for both comments and trackbacks. This feature could be made easier to find. I found a script that inserted the paragraph tags in entries, but it required poking around through assorted menus. So don’t toss your copy of HTML for Dummies just yet. However, one formatting quirk persists: it’s still necessary to insert paragraph tags at the beginning of each paragraph, despite the local preview pane showing properly formatted text.

Although your post will be filled with markup tags instead of WYSIWYG text, it beats figuring out how to format a post yourself.
To format the text in the new post, highlight the chosen text, then select the specific option from the Markup drop-down menu in the upper-right corner of the window. To start a new post, just choose the New Post option and begin typing in the pop-up window.

While the previous version of MarsEdit was most effective for bloggers who had a working grasp of HTML, this update is friendlier to markup newbies. MarsEdit 2 packs both content and customization features into a relatively small space.
